NEW YORK, March 9 (Reuters) - Morgan Stanley Dean Witter said Tuesday that analyst Catherine Lewis started coverage of five cosmetics and personal care companies, including Avon Products Inc. (NYSE:AVP - news) and Gillette Co. (NYSE:G - news).

-- Lewis began coverage of Gillette as an outperform with a target of $68 per share, assuming an 8 percent discount rate and a target price/earnings multiple of 1.7 times that of the Standard & Poor 500's 2000 earnings-per-share estimate. ''In 2000, she expects production economies of scale generated by Gillette's proprietary high-speed blade equipment to accelerate the company's earnings and operating return on assets,'' read a research note.

OMAHA, Neb., March 9 (Reuters) - Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (NYSE:BRKa - news), the wildly diverse and successful holding company of billionaire investor Warren Buffett, said Tuesday its net earnings rose nearly 50 percent in 1998.

The company, which owns, among other things, insurance companies, a restaurant chain and a jeweler, said its net earnings for the year ended December 31 rose to $2.8 billion from $1.9 billion in 1997.

Buffett, who owns stakes in such blue chips as Gillette Co. (NYSE:G - news) and Coca Cola Co. (NYSE:KO - news), typically declines to discuss his investments and does not make stock or investment recommendations.
