Wouldn't FirstAid 2000 or CheckIt discern a bad clock? Maybe the programs don't test that. That theory sounds to be a good thing to suggest to the shop's technician.

I talked to them on the phone today. They've already seen my machine returned for repair twice and told me that this is the first time they've seen this type of problem and that they are genuinely perplexed. Also, they reassured me that they stand behind their machines, have been in business 10 years, and will do what it takes to satisfy me etc.

This particular machine though doesn't really excite me. The sound and video card are built onto the motherboard, and when you look at Windows magazine's WinList or PC Computing's similar list, an individual component of an integrated mother board never even deserves mention when compared with, say, Creative Labs Soundblaster Live or an ATI 3D Xpression video card.
