The intermittency of the occurrence is such that, after a period of sporadic freezing - like yesterday is often followed by a period such as today, where so far 2 1/2 hours have elapsed with no problems....

Taking the thing back of course brings instant deprivation of a useful tool for about a week. And then there's the matter of backing up the files.

I wouldn't have started this thread though if I didn't fully intend to do something about it! Actually, I'm now interested in the subject and would like to hear about other's experiences. Still the mystery remains...is it Windows 98 or hardware? If I just go demand a new machine or a refund, perhaps the answer will never be known!
