John: We all get caught when a news service misquotes. There have been a dozen in the last two weeks where a wire service article (or article written in response to a wire service comment) has proven to be inaccurate. Emachine sold 180,000 units during their first (Fall) quarter, if memory serves me well, so it is indeed not in the top 6 by a long shot. On the other hand, I read the "6th overall" comment in a wire piece myself.
Your comment about all of us being a bit more careful about our sources is a good one. I've been tripped up personally when I've come upon a piece that "confirms" what I've been seeing in the field. I pounce on it with a grin,.....THERE,....I KNEW I was right,.....finally the world is catching up to me (brilliant mind that I am). I chorkle as I punch it into my keyboard for my pals to see,....vindication is mine.
A while later,....OOOPS,....missed that little date, or that reference to units rather than revenues, or the reference to 1998, as opposed to 1999. And of course one's opponents, or pals delight in pointing out the flub. (and I don't blame them,....something satisfying about pointing out where someone makes a point with info that is mis-understood or mis-quoted. (g)
