Compaq Lands Agreement With China's CS&S to Develop COSIX64, Chinese 64-Bit UNIX for PRC
biz.yahoo.com

For the a related piece of information, it has been reported (not in this article) in China that the the central government has ordered the local governments and their branches get computerized and connected with networks. Many will implement Unix platforms.

I have over a dozen cousins over there. 3 got computers and 2 of them are recently connected to the Internet which just gets cheaper to connect. Not sure how popular Compaq is over there but you bet CPUs will be in demand no matter which brands of computers are being purchased.

The unlikely competitor of PC vendors for potential new Internet users in China is Microsoft according to this news:
dailynews.yahoo.com
Microsoft Corp chairman Bill Gates unveiled Wednesday a new operating system designed to bring Internet access to Chinese homes at less than one-fifth the price of a personal computer.
(AMD chips will be used in the device.)
