Rudedog, it was my understanding, perhaps I am incorrect, that several analysts had indicated that Compaq had too much inventory in the channel at the end of the fourth Q, and that CPQ itself acknowledged this as an inventory management problem. Let me root around and see if I can find the URL for this stuff.
