I don't have any answers either, Steven. It is natural to want your child to succeed, because it spares them so much pain down the road of life. Obviously, if your children are freaking out in any way, there has been too much pressure, and a psychological evaluation and treatment are in order. My point, however, was that the messages we send to girls about what we value about physical appearance are extremely damaging to them. My husband and I were in a bookstore the other day and they had a wonderfully erotic book of early pornographic photographs. None of the women were really thin--they all had rounded curves and meat on their bones. I had almost forgotten what women used to look like! There was not even one of those physiologically impossible, extremely skinny women with bulked up biceps and hard, artificial breasts protruding from the middle of the chest.
