Dan,

Simple mind? You've compelled me to research what I've taken for granted for many years and I am thankful.

Answering the one question... "..why do you suppose baptism is in the word as much as it is?"

Water baptism is a very important picture of the death, burying and resurrection of Jesus Christ thus the terminology in I Peter 3:21 describing baptism as "The like figure..." and it is an important ordinance to follow. We are showing an outward profession of faith obediently, and a "figure" is a representation. The Lord set the example (He didn't need salvation and yet He was baptized) and we must obediently do as He instructed.

Look at the parallel with the Lord's table. Does it save us or is it an ordinance to be obeyed? Much in the word is mentioned of this as well as baptism. If it wasn't important like baptism the Lord wouldn't have set this example either.

We know it doesn't save us as the Lord instructed us to "Do this in remembrance of me." Yet Catholicism has taken this to an unscriptural level of transubstantiation and the eucharist being the actual body and blood of Christ. Their instruction is they are receiving the "actual" Christ as Saviour in this way and it is essential to believe this as their souls hang in the balance.

It always comes back to the simplicity in Christ, no works, no rituals, no traditions. Just Jesus as a perfect gift, people complicate the issue.

I hope I'm answering your question and not going off on a tangent.

God bless you through this day,
John
