Marengi says Novell has $1B to put in play

Novell Inc. President Joseph Marengi
told a New York investment conference
today that the company may use its $1
billion stash to acquire new products or
technologies.

Speaking at the Goldman Sachs
Technology Symposium, Marengi also
told the investment community that a
CEO would be named in 30 to 60 days.

The embattled Orem, Utah, networking
company is facing a darkened mood
among shareholders, particularly this
week after the California Public
Employees' Pension System, the nation's
largest pension fund, put Novell on its
"laggard" list of poorly performing
companies.

Novell has become a target among some
members of one Internet newsgroup,
Silicon Investors, who are trying to mount
a grass-roots effort to unseat the
company's board of directors and
executives. Messages posted on the
board over the past two days repeatedly
refer to CalPERS as the potential leader
of a movement.

CalPERS spokesman Brad Pacheco
said the pension fund has no plans to file
any actions against Novell unless the
company fails to take steps to remedy its
lagging position.

I understand more to come on this one.... The CEO announcement to be made in 30-60 days says Marengie. That puts it right around earnings time....
