Some thoughts on Qwest being a takeover candidate:

Somehow, I don't think Anschutz and Nacchio are building this company with the idea of being taken over by someone else.

Anschutz owns something like 48% of the stock and would have little trouble getting an additional 3% to side with him if someone tries to buy them out.

Nacchio came from a stodgy telco, and I don't think he exactly would like the idea of being taken over by another stodgy telco and getting in to that scene again.

By the end of this year, Qwest will be running between most cities in the U.S. Next, they need to acquire companies with fiber networks within cities. Then, fiber to the home.

If they can do that, then who needs stodgy telcos? It might give your local cable company a little competition, too.

At that point, it may be too late for someone to try to buy them out - they may have become too big.
