CLEARWATER, Fla., March 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Vela Research LP, a leading provider of video compression products for the cable and broadcast industries, today disclosed that its Argus AFF MPEG -2 encoder has been selected by The WB 100+ Station Group for use in encoding spots that are distributed to its cable delivered stations nationwide. The spot distribution and insertion system developed jointly by Warner Bros. and IBM, employs four Argus encoding suites at the front end, and allows The WB 100+ to manage, distribute and insert local advertisements digitally.
At the WB 100+ central facility in Los Angeles, four encoding suites have been installed to encode promos, trailers, and local commercials that are received on tape from the local advertisers. Along with the Argus AFF encoders, the encoding suites are each composed of five tape machines -- 1" tape, 3/4" tape, SVHS, Digital Betacam, and DVCPro -- and a video/audio router. The analog and digital spots are routed to the Argus and encoded to the MPEG -2 format. Once encoded, the material is then passed on to IBM servers for distribution via satellite to the local cable headends for playback.
"The Argus encoder is the first crucial step in the spot distribution system for The WB 100+," commented Julie Biondi, director of facilities. "And that means we have to be assured of not only the quality in the encoding process but also the reliability of the encoders. Argus has proven itself in both instances."
Argus AFF is a PC-based Windows NT encoding system designed for a broad range of professional applications. Argus AFF accepts composite, Y/C, YUV and component serial digital (SMPTE 259M) video inputs, and has two or four channels for analog or digital (AES/EBU) audio. A batch mode enables encoding of multiple clips and the graphical user interface (GUI) allows for ease of operation with a user-friendly encoding environment.
The WB 100+ Station Group is a local cable-delivered station group that is affiliated with The WB Television Network and is exclusive to markets 100 - 210. The WB 100+ launched in 82 markets September 21, 1998.
