Re: DSL modems
Check out this article. I'm in one of the states where this is going to be offered. This would be 3x the speed of my 500 Kbps cable modem! This is the kind of technology that will get me to resubscribe with AOL, even with all of the useless fluff that caused me to drop them last year (but thankfully I held on to my AOL stock).

SBC to offer faster AOL
Agreement on DSL lines to allow users to get online 50 times faster
March 11, 1999: 9:20 a.m. ET
NEW YORK (CNNfn) - About 8.4 million customers of some SBC Communications phone companies in California and the Southwest will be able to get high-speed access to America Online by year's end under an agreement announced Thursday. Under the deal, AOL (AOL) subscribers in areas where SBC (SBC) will provide digital subscriber lines, or DSL, can upgrade their online service for an additional $20 a month. What they'll get is the ability to connect to the Internet at 1.5 million bits per second, more than 50 times faster than current 28,800 bps connections. The companies said AOL customers also won't have to dial-up every time they want to log in, since DSL users are always connected. And AOL subscribers can be online and use their telephone or fax at the same time. SBC says the enhanced service will be available to customers in California, Texas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas and Nevada by the end of 1999. AOL reached a similar agreement earlier this year with Bell Atlantic (BEL). AOL stock closed Wednesday at 92-13/16, up 2-11/16. SBC closed down 5/16 at 51-11/16. |
