Jealous man stabbed wife nine times over Net affair

AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE in Perth
A jealous Australian man who stabbed his wife nine times because she was having cybersex with a man thousands of kilometres away, was jailed yesterday for eight years.

Barry McCormack, 45, admitted in the Western Australia Supreme Court that he had become jealous because he felt his wife's Internet love affair was shutting him out of her life.

He was found guilty of causing grievous bodily harm to Alison Garton, but acquitted of attempted murder.

During the three-day trial, the jury heard how Ms Garton, a mother of three, had an affair via the Internet with a man living in the state of Victoria, 4,000km away.

She spent several hours each night on a computer and her husband felt rejected and inadequate, the court was told.

"As time went on, she became involved with a few guys on the Internet and had cybersex with them," McCormack told the jury.

Ms Garton and her principal Internet lover, David Van Heurck, 40, met for the first time during the court hearing.

Mr Van Heurck told the court that, as the friendship matured, they became sexually intimate.

He also said Ms Garton had sent him a tape recording of her and McCormack making love.
