"The Straight Skinny"

I am always sad when people use surrogate issues to cloak anger which is actually derived from another source. I am a capitalist and relatively conservative, however I think there is room on the planet for everything. As we continue to develop and expand industry, we should also make an effort to preserve forests and other areas of natural beauty.

All too often however, radical environmentalists are not as concerned about the environment as they are about expressing their resentment about some other issue. They see environmentalism as an acceptable channel through which to vent other feelings. Some who have no interest in functioning in the corporate or business world are embittered by this fact and by the success of their peers. Through environmentalist causes, they can lash back at those who have succeeded in these realms.

In other cases, although they are mature in years, they are still rebelling against their fathers and mothers, who they continue to see as authoritarian figures in suits. Unfortunately, some overlook the fact that they continue to enjoy financial support from their parents.

Militant environmentalists often need to be helped to understand that their anger is somewhat disproportional to the issues at hand. Indeed, their hostility is often misplaced altogether. It is always kind to help such people understand the deeper roots of their frustration. Some useful suggestions include: going back to school, a change of vocation, and developing self-esteem in other areas.
