say you give a limit halfway between the ask and bid to buy cheaper than the ask. Another guy tells his broker to sell but higher than the bid.
You could be doing business with another through the MM whose job is to arrange just that - he deals for himself when he cannot find a party for you, he has to 'make the market' and act as buyer or seller when needed. Another possibility: you don't want to pay the ask, the MM has too many shares and no one else is selling. He might lower his ask. And so on.
