Donald:

I'm not an engineer, but the system involves electro-magnetic induction between two wire coils. The energy transfer is used to charge an implanted back-up battery or to directly power the HeartSaver VAD.

I do plan to enquire about the amount of energy required, when I place a call to the company next week. I'd be happy to get any specific information you want, if you let me know.

World Heart's system would certainly have major "lifestyle" advantages over the other two competitors with units twice the weight and wires perforating the skin. However you slice it (pardon the pun), it's a huge annual market with the alternative to the end user being essentially death. The key attraction for the insurance providers is that billions are spent already treating people with drugs but they die anyway.

The aging of the population is just going to make this market bigger as this device goes into full commercialization.
