OTOTOT: Gary,

<When did your son begin to know how to drive a mouse?>

This is really key....once he mastered the mouse, there was no stopping him. I believe he became self-sufficient on the mouse at just under 2 yrs. He didn't take to it right away...which was fine. At first he would want to sit on my lap and have me move it for him. Then he learned to move it but not to click. Then he learned to move it and click and he was off to the races. Fortunately, my down level PC (Dell P120) had a CD-ROM which uses caddies. I always hated those darn things, but for a kid they are great!! No tray to break and he can manhandle the caddies without damaging the disks. Each disk has it's own clear caddy which allows him to pick and choose which one he wants and just stick it in the slot, like he would a VHS tape.

Re: software

Michael already gave you a good list. Here are some of the ones we have in the order in which he used them. All of the toddler ones are good. JumpStart and Toddler don't need the mouse (of course you can use it). Reader Rabbit is a good one to help him learn the mouse.

JumpStart Toddlers
Reader Rabbit for Toddlers
Fisher Price Ready For School Toddler
Fisher Price Ready For Preschool
Sesame Street Toddlers Deluxe (3 discs)
Blues Clues ABC
Blues Clues Birthday Adventure (2 discs)
Putt-Putt Enters The Race
Freddi The Fish 2 - Haunted School House
Freddi The Fish - Case Of The Missing Kelp
Ready To Read With Pooh
The Land Before Time Kindergarten Adventure

I don't think he is giving up anything by using the PC. He would probably be watching more videos and TV (educational) if he wasn't on the PC.

Hope this helps,

FF
