My litmus test with environmental activists is to ask how they think we ought to generate electricity.

Coal = air pollution and strip mines
Oil = dependence on Bad Arabs, not great for the air, expensive
Nuclear = don't even think about it.
Hydroelectric = flooding beautiful river basins
Solar = Can't do it on a large enough scale - do we want to cover thousands of acres with panels?

And on, and on... the smart ones acknowledge that everything is a tradeoff, there are negatives to any method, and all we can do is seek balance and try to diminish environmental costs in each case.

The dumb ones try to change the subject, usually by going off on a rant.
