Review ordered in approval of bovine growth hormone

OTTAWA - The Senate Committee on Agriculture is annoyed
over Health Canada's handling of the bovine growth hormone
called rbST. Now it wants a review of the department's drug
approval process.

The senators acted after a complaint from Health Canada
veterinary scientists. They said they were pressured to accept
rbST even though they felt it needed a lot more testing.

rbST promotes milk production in dairy cows. Health Canada
rejected its use two months ago because of concerns about
animal health. They found that when the hormone was
regularly injected into a cow, it caused an udder infection
called mastitis, infertility and an increased risk of lameness.

The government agency also concluded that human health
was not considered an issue with the synthetic hormone,
although some consumer and health advocates worry it may
cause cancer or antibiotic resistance in humans as it moves
through the food chain.

The United States approved rbST use four years ago but
Ottawa postponed its decision pending further study. The
manufacturer, Monsanto, says it does not consider the
January decision final and plans to try for approval again.
