Hi Pat,
Good to hear from you again.
Hmm, Ciena has done well to expand it's customer base. It's interesting that they have achieved grating separations that allow a 96 channel signal in a commercial product. Lucent was touting 216 channels in the lab as of Jan. '97. I guess they've run into some glitch trying to get it out on the street. AFAIK, Ciena still relies on LuLUs patents for some of it's gear, precarious, eh? You are, I'm sure, also aware of the litigation that is ongoing with one of the founders of Ciena. Sour grapes, no doubt, but of the outcome, I remain unsure. P***ing contests are such a joy.
By the representation of Telemonde as the most important new customer, I believe what Ms. Whelan was saying was that Ciena still hasn't broken into the "club", still dealing with the upstarts of the world. Well, I like that on a philosophical level, but the market muscle is still with the PTTs and the "Bellys". When Nettles nets this "game", then he's got a game on his hand. But not before. And, oh, by the way, did the article mention margins, hmm.
