yeah. But the "officially" part can make a big difference. Before Ballmer was promoted, he was one of several executives who shared the title of "president". The executives were known as BOP -- "Bill and the Office of the Presidency". It may be just a coincidence, but it still strikes me as strange that Silverberg and Pete Higgins both took leaves at about the same time Ballmer took the "President" title as his alone.

I just looked at some of the older proxy statements to verify that Silverberg was part of BOP and I'm not sure he was. The '97 proxy indicates that it was only Ballmer, Herbold, Maritz, and Vergnes, so my memory that both Silverberg and Higgins were given the BOP title as well may be wrong. At any rate, Ballmer's official ascension changes things considerably. As Executive Vice President, Sales and Support and BOP member, he had far less power than he now has as President.
