**Today's Mail** Live WCDMA multimedia calls on show in Britain ------------------------------------------------------- Ericsson recently conducted the world's first public demonstration of live WCDMA multimedia calls for third-generation (3G) mobile communications. The calls were made at the opening of Ericsson's WCDMA center outside London.
At the inauguration, Ericsson demonstrated a variety of WCDMA wireless multimedia applications, including video calls and links to the company's WCDMA system in Sweden. The British center is open to existing operators and new candidates for 3G licenses in the U.K. Besides providing a fully operational network, the Ericsson center will also enable further testing and evaluation of new wireless handsets and services.
"This will give potential 3G operators, regardless of present experience, valuable real-world insight about what to expect from services," says Torbjörn Nilsson, Ericsson's executive vice president of marketing and sales.
Lars Bergendahl, product manager and operations director for UMTS at Ericsson, says that the demonstration was a success. "It has dramatically changed Ericsson's position in the U.K.," he says. "All objectives were achieved."Ericsson to test 3G system in Canada ------------------------------------------------------- In June, Ericsson will begin operating an experimental facility for third-generation (3G) technology in Canada. This will be the latest experimental system launched around the world by Ericsson. Other sites include Japan, Sweden, Britain, Italy and Germany.
The Ericsson demonstration facility in Montreal will implement a 3G Edge system and will showcase Internet protocol and other datacom services over wireless wide area networks at speeds up to 384 kbps.
The facility also will be linked to Ericsson's 3G Edge demo facility in Texas and its Cyberlabs in New York and California, allowing a networked application-sharing environment which utilizes all IP-related technologies.
Edge technology is the wide area component of the proposal for evolving current TDMA networks to handle speeds required for 3G service (the UWC designation of the wide area component is 136HS). Edge and GPRS technology are both part of a common 3G evolution package Ericsson is offering TDMA and GSM operators.
E-commerce solution makes banking easy ------------------------------------------------------- Ericsson recently acquired a wireless electronic commerce technology from Sweden's Postgirot Bank for use in its own e-commerce solutions. The solution offers superior security for financial transactions, making it possible for customers to pay bills and access their bank accounts from mobile phones.
Postgirot Bank spearheaded development of the technology and has carried out extensive pilot tests on it within its own organization since 1997. The solution includes a tailor-made SIM card that offers digital authentication.
Bengt Mandell, who is in charge of business support at Postgirot Bank, says the solution offers users simplicity in accessing account information. "You can basically do it anywhere and at any time within the GSM service area," he says.
Service and content providers will be able to use the programmable solution to offer a complete portfolio of wireless e-commerce capabilities to their customers.

CeBIT Conference events scheduled ------------------------------------------------------- The latest products, technology developments and future trends in wireless data third-generation (3G) technology will be featured at next week's CeBIT 99 conference in Hannover, Germany.
Conference attendees and press members will be able to speak with Ericsson executives and specialists during a series of live Internet chats. Ericsson participants will include Mats Dahlin, executive vice president network operators and service providers and Haijo Pietersma, executive vice president enterprise solutions.
A press conference with Ericsson CEO Sven-Christer Nilsson is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Thursday, March 18, and a party for press and analysts will be held later that evening. The next day features a series of lectures on various topics, from the creation of service in 3G networks to GSM on the Net, a new product for the enterprise market that adds base stations to local data communications hubs. Also covered will be such innovations as Bluetooth technology and wireless application protocol (WAP) applications beyond microbrowsing.

Finland first to grant 3G licenses ------------------------------------------------------- Finland has become the first country to begin the process of granting licenses for third-generation (3G) mobile telephone technology operators. The Finnish Ministry of Transport and Communications could issue the 20-year licenses as early as this spring, and the new technology would be available to users by 2002.
Rather than auctioning off licenses or frequencies, the ministry plans to award licenses to those proposals it feels best meet the intent of the Finnish Telecommunications Market Act. Because operators are already bound by the strictures of the act and other legislation, there are no coverage or major technology requirements for the license. In addition, all frequency units will be made available to the licensees.
Of the 15 applicants for 3G business, licenses will be awarded to four. Thirteen of the 15 applicants already are operators in Finland, and most propose using the European Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) technology standard.
