Samsung Becomes First to Offer Internet Telephony Cable Modem for IP Multiservices Network Samsung Enables Canadian-based Groupe Videotron to Offer

DALLAS, March 11 /PRNewswire/ via NewsEdge Corporation -- Samsung Telecommunications America (STA), Inc., today announced it has signed a contract to deliver Internet telephony cable modems (ITCM) to Le Groupe Videotron Itee, one of Canada's largest cable providers. The contract gives Samsung the potential to reach Groupe Videotron's subscriber base of more than 2.3 million homes passed. Samsung's new InfoRanger(TM) Internet telephony cable modem is the first to be licensed for the Internet protocol multiservices network being developed by Cisco Systems and Bellcore.
Groupe Videotron selected Samsung as its ITCM supplier because of the company's demonstrated commitment to deliver industry-standard cable modems to the consumer market.

The modem and packet-based network will be deployed in Videotron Itee's service area in the province of Quebec. Field trials are scheduled to begin in the second half of 1999, with full commercial availability planned for the first quarter of 2000.

Using coaxial cable, Samsung's ITCM allows simultaneous telephony, high- speed Internet access, video services and fax capabilities. It supports industry standard protocols for the voice over IP network and is based on the DOCSIS 1.1 standard.
