I asked pz about the cost of plugging wells and here is the answer I received, FYI.

The cost for us to plug a 5000' well locally (central Texas) would be around $20,000 and that may be on the high side. If they have to drill out the old plugs and replug the well, depending on the difficulty of drilling out the plugs, then maybe twice the price or more.

Of course I don't know of the depth of the wells you are talking about or the location of them. This can have a huge impact on the price, on whether they have to do a lot of location clean up also.

Your $200,000 figure does seem pretty excessive though. Maybe you should suggest that they plug them like they did in the good old days in the early 1900's when they just drove a tree stump down the casing to plug them....gggg.

Regards,

Paul
