The way I understand this stuff is that the zone which carries the gold deposits is actually quite wide but the gold zones themselves are kind of spotty. The purpose of the drilling was simply to confirm the ongoing presence of gold in the zone. I believe all holes were drilled from a single underground setup in a scattergun array.
Along the strike and dip it is expected that widths and grades will vary considerably with a general tendancy to become richer at depth.
