Fixing broken machinery is often much more complex than building well designed machines from scratch.

Do you want to hire a few thousand folks that spent the last 5 years of their life trying to put YOU (Intel) out of business ?

Moreover, AMD's fabs are not for sale, Intel doesn't need them, Intel doesn't want them.

It's a moot point.

This did two things:

1. It got Intel OUT of a problem (DEC lawsuit)- not INTO a problem.
2. It gave Intel the StrongARM devices, designs and Intellectual Property as well as some PCI bridge chips - all of which have value in their OWN right.
