Hiking trails in the mountains remains one of my favorite things to do. I lived for a while in the center of the mountains in northern Luzon. Tribal country, wonderful weather for hiking: tropical, but about 5/6000 feet up, which cuts the heat down.

Now I live by the ocean, which is how the sea kayaks got into the picture. The whitewater stuff is an attempt to capture lost youth, pretty nutty but I like it. There are only a half-dozen people in the country that do it, so we have plenty of new rivers to discover, first descents every year, and you never meet another boat on the water. Not that any of us are really that good.

Writing about it is a way to at least earn enough out of these obsessions to cover what I spend on them, and get some free travel in.

Tell us about the mountains in Panama? Do you get montane rain forest at altitude, those masses of twisted little trees, like a forest of bonsai?
