Hey Pat, Thanks.
<< "BroadBand's technology is very promising," says Jerry R. Hobbs, an analyst at KMI Corp. a Newport, R.I., market-research firm. "It offers much more opportunity for bandwidth transmission than ADSL can offer. The sticking point is whether customers will actually demand that and whether they'll be willing to pay for it." And without pressure from cable companies offering competing technologies, phone companies have no immediate incentive to upgrade lines. >>
He he. Vern Mackell is right about that many thought that there would be this big phone vs. cable thing...I think many Still think that and that cracks me up...I certainly was one who thought that, too...but thanks to much research and the fine reading around here, its just plain old dumb and stupid (PODS) to think that anymore.
The wire in the back of my PC is copper and it will continue to be so. Its that simple...and as Jim has talked about so many times, the continuing growth of new applications provided from the PC and the copper (a la xDSL) into the PC will make the PC the center controlling device of the new narrowbands of the future and in several years, even some types of broadband into the home...Interactive TV is dead...and Interactive PC is coming up from under the media fluff carpet, just as the Web appeared while everyone was trying to think about what we would do to make the Info Highway possible. Now phone companies having "no incentive" to upgrading to ADSL bc cable modems are 'more dead' now, makes sense for a brief moment...but let's look at whats happening in the ISP fields...welcome to the new competition and welcome to more alliances...and I think the fact that most RBOCs and GTE have announced plans for ADSL roll outs within the year says pretty damn strong incentive, although 'immediate' isn't the greatest word. :-)
I read that Wired article about ADSL and it was okay, except for the parts comparing CAP to DMT...which was about half the article. :-) It kind of amazed me that they give one the impression that both are just beginning to fight it out now...yeah, right, and MOT, TI, NEC, ADI, AMTX, AWRE, USRX, ASND, ORKT, WSTL don't mean anything for DMT...the writer could have just asked one of these companies what will be more popular within the year, no? God, even I can pick up a darn phone.
Well, I heard the Huble got fixed...excellent news. Can't Jim work on the stock instead? :-)
