I don't get that services was the problem, I thought that revenues were strong in that area. It was database licenses that was off. I can't see that improving this year. The Y2K things has a lot of people spending money on services rather than new software. I can't see Oracle 8i making an impact soon. Anyone who has worked with Oracle's database product knows that it isn't a good idea to be out on the bleeding edge of Oracle's products. The software works well, eventually, but usually the new features aren't stable in the early releases. I'm curious if anyone knows whether or not Oracle 8i is a free upgrade if you have an existing license. That is generally the case, and if so, existing Oracle licenses will migrate to 8i without buying a new license. I don't think I would be too concerned about database licenses. Oracle has sold enough of them that eventually the installed customer base will have to level off. Oracle will continue to grow revenues as their web servers and apps severs and apps software sales increase (providing the new versions of these products are stable). Services revenue will continue to become a larger piece of the pie. If you have their products, you have to have a support agreement and people hire their consulting services without even knowing much about what they are buying. Oracle is a huge business and it will continue to grow. In the unix market, its the only game in town. My biggest concern is that L.E. is a highly visionary person and somewhat full of shit. His vision of the future of network computing is right on the money but his timing and deliverly usually sucks. He is a loose cannon and it would serve the company better if Ray Lane did all the talking. Or better yet, they let the products do the talking. For some interesting insight into L.E. and the company, I would highly recommend the book 'The difference between God and L.E'.
