This CineComm thing seems quite real--thanks for all your responses. (Sorry Maurice: had missed your stab at quantifying earlier). Using this to deliver movies to the home sounds like the huge payoff to me, though of course it will have to start off with the movie theaters until the technology matures enough to bring pricing down.
I have a friend who is currently into doing the "home theater" deal in his house. He's got plenty of economic firepower and technical sophistication to pretty much lay in the state of the art. (I've got a sidebet with him: if it's ready by the Masters Golf Tournament, I buy his first 1/2 dozen DVDs). Anyway although it's not yet fired up, he reports an amazing opinion: it does not appear that huge things have happened in the old consumer electronics game for more than 10 years! Sure, lots of evolutionary improvements, but nothing really boffo. His biggest disappointment was that all the projection TVs he looked at were still not ready for Prime Time. Picture quality just not as good as direct projection, viewing angle has to be dead on, etc. This is really bizarre when you think of all the revolutionary stuff happening elsewhere.
Bottom line: he'd jump on this CineComm in a heart beat. Once the economics are in place, I think QCOM and TXN have a legitimate shot at a significant opportunity here. As a sidenote, I would also guess that the LORs of the world will push this along smartly as the birds obviously are the key delivery mechanism. Fun stuff to speculate about! SM
