Meanwhile, several high-profile tech stocks took beatings as well. Oracle (NASDAQ:ORCL - news) dropped nearly 23% to close at $28.56, and Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT - news) dropped $1.25 to $160.19.

Two internet stocks embroiled in a takeover controversy plunged as well. CMGI (NASDAQ:CMGI - news) dropped $18.13, or nearly 10% to close at $164 while Lycos (NASDAQ:LCOS - news) fell $10.38, or nearly 10%, to $98.68.

Lucent (NYSE:LU - news) lost $3.13 to close at $103.25, AT&T (NYSE:T - news) was down $1.13 to $81.44, and IBM (NYSE:IBM - news) closed down $4.88 at $178.

Other techs to fall: Cisco Systems (NASDAQ:CSCO - news) dropped $2.25 to $103.25, 3Com (NASDAQ:COMS - news) lost $0.44 to close at $25.69 and Novell (NASDAQ:NOVL - news) fell $0.88 to finish at $24.13.
