djane and all,
Is it China desperate to get this Hughes deal or vice versa?
Beijing, March 13 (Bloomberg) -- Shi Guangsheng, China's foreign trade minister, said the U.S. should reverse its decision to ban the export of a Hughes Electronics Corp. mobile communications satellite, saying such a ban hurts U.S. companies more than it hurts China, the South China Morning Post reported. Shi said China can always buy such satellites from other countries, the Post reported. ''It is wrong for the U.S. to use security as an excuse to stop normal trade,'' the paper quoted Shi as saying.
U.S.-China relations have become strained over a growing U.S. trade deficit with China, alleged Chinese theft of U.S. nuclear secrets and charges of human rights violations in China. Hughes Electronics is a unit of General Motors Corp. (South China Morning Post, 3/13, Business, p. 1, www.scmp.com)
