Michael,

Apple sure is in the territory of buyout, which could prevent
many investors from holding short position.

However, Apple executives' current mission would be to rescue from
Apple's sliding sales, rather than to put it on sale. IBM tried to
buy Apple for $45/share in 91 or Sun failed in an attempt last year.
I think many potential buyers are still very interested in acquiring
such company.

Apple's stock could go either way. You have to figure out which way
has higher probability based on your assumptions in your scenario.
Apple has strided to put the most advanced products in the market in
97. With its strong positions in Education, Multimedia, and Internet,
it seems that Apple still could enjoy its growth. Besides, Apple's
oversaes market share is very stable from its historical data.
This is just my own opinion.
