I decided to take another look at the Sony announcement and assume for the moment it is an I2O device just to see what sort of earnings it could create for WIND. I have tried to confirm if it is an I2O device or not but with no luck. Anyway here goes. Here's the Sony/LSI announcement Sony Selects LSI Logic to Supply Key I/O Processor for Next Generation PlayStation. Enhanced MIPS Based Processor Provides Advanced I/O Capability. biz.yahoo.com Note that Sony, LSI and Symbios (now owned by LSI) are all members of the I2O SIG. i2osig.org Also the description of the LSI IOP sounds very much like I2O. You will find that the link to the LSI web site which describes the IOP has expired. I did copy and paste an extract before it expired. exchange2000.com Assumptions ------------- 1. Sony have shipped 50 million playstation units since its debut in Japan in 1994. Which is about 10 million units a year. 2. Take the royalty at about $1.50 per chip. I have no idea if this is correct but it is close to the Intel number. 3. The IOP contains IxWorks. Not confirmed Total revenue per year = $15 million Income per year after tax say about = $10 million Increase to earnings pre split = $0.375 (28 million shares) Increase to earnings post split = $0.245 (43 million shares) If the LSI IOP does contain IxWorks it looks like this could be quite significant for WIND. Does anyone think I am barking up the wrong tree or completely off base ? inputs welcome. Please note that there is no confirmation that the LSI IOP does contain IxWorks and the above is just speculation. PS. The playstation 2 is due to start shipping in about a year from now.
