Mission Critical vs. Non-critical: A few weeks ago I posted a note on what the govt. of British Columbia said about its Y2K preparations. They first identified 1200 computer-reliant systems. They deemed 67 of these as "mission-critical", and promised to get these 67 over the finish line. There will be another 1,133 systems to check and repair. There was no indication of what checks and repairs will have been made to these 1,133 systems by 1/1/00, but it is reasonable to assume that they have not gotten the attention of the 67. And since they are not mission critical, perhaps some will not be fixed. But it is certainly a huge "future log" of work - and it is at just one provincial government. This "future log" can be multiplied many times over when one considers all the other agencies, businesses, and organizations that have "mission non-critical" work to do after 1/1/00. It appears to be a larger job than fixing "mission critical" systems.
