Well, this is definitely true, Steven, of people who are trying to be GOOD parents, who will lean over backwards not to repeat the mistakes of their own parents. Harsh Victorian and Edwardian standards, in fact, led directly to the "permissive" parenting styles of the fifties and sixties in America, from what I have read.

Then in the seventies most of the mothers headed off to work, and parenting to a much larger degree has become unconscious, catch-as-catch-can, really, for huge numbers of children who are mostly unsupervised and unparented. How sad!
