I think IE 5.0 is a non-event. Even though it is free, it can keep potential threats to Windows out. If IE gets so much better than Navigator, it will be hard for AOL to drop it in the future. Furthermore, it MSFT keeps improving it---AOL may not have a choice but to keep the better browser and the one most consumers want to use. It would be too risky for AOL to use Navigator only (now or in the future) because they could alienate their customers. Due to this Navigator will not get widespread acceptance and therefore the possibility to dethrone Windows is diminished (i am talking about the threat that MSFT faced a couple of years from now) This AOL/Netscape threat is only a media thing. I don't really think MSFT is threatened but instead AOL feels competitive pressures. MSFT wants to use the opportunity to their advantage in the trial---that they feel AOL is a major threat.
