First, I don't think we can assume that the OS that to be included in the consumer group is going to be Windows98. It could very well be the consumer OS to be built on the NT kernel, unless they're convinced that such a thing just isn't going to happen. It might even be something built on CE if they get very imaginative.

Although I'd love to see it happen, it strikes me as highly unlikely that Microsoft would do anything that would make it easier for the court to order a divestiture. Killing off Windows 95/98 code base is the best way to assure that the court has a hard time finding any logical splitting points. (Although they might still order the old code base to be opened for licensing by others.)

But where would CE fit into the reorg? I doubt very much that it will be in the Enterprise group with NT and BackOffice. If it isn't in Consumer, then look for it in Knowledge Workers.

By the way, I saw a new Sharp machine the other day with CE. Very impressive. It has a small but genuinely useful keyboard. Tiny. I'm impressed for the first time.
