Joe, I forgot to mention what Blue did... about the not sleeping through the night part. It's like having a new baby. I didn't get a good nights sleep for a week, but again, it is worth it! That special word is important too.
Another thing that you can do..my puppy had trouble letting me know she had to go ot. There were no obvious signs like barking, whining or running to the door. So after reading this in a book, we bought a large jingle bell- about 1" from a craft store. It hangs on a string on the doorknob near the door, and she rings it with her nose when she need to go out. She whacks it hard with her paw if she REALLY needs to go. We would ask her if she wanted to go out and telling her ring the bell, while jingling it as we went outside. It took TWO days for her to get it - when she was only 2 months old - never had a problem since.
