DRAMATIC TECHNOLOGY BREAKTHROUGH YIELDS WAFER-THIN
HIGH-FIDELITY LOUDSPEAKERS
-NXTr Technology Destined to Revolutionize Home Theater, Automotive, Multimedia and Public Address Speaker Design-
LAS VEGAS, January 10, 1997 - New Transducer Technologies (NXT), a U.K.-based licensing company, today demonstrated a radical new breakthrough in loudspeaker technology which makes it possible for high-fidelity loudspeakers to be fabricated in virtually any size and shape, with a minimum thickness of less than 1/32nd of an inch.
Envisioned as a key enabling technology for the next generation of home theater, automotive, multimedia and public address loudspeakers, NXT technology offers designers the opportunity to create the first truly "invisible" high-fidelity loudspeakers. This capability brings high-fidelity sound to objects and locations where good sound was previously impossible to achieve because of size and cost constraints.
NXT's proprietary technology, inspired by work done by the British Defense Ministry, marks a radical break from all previous attempts at panel loudspeaker design. Central to NXT technology is the use of a thin rigid panel driven by a tiny exciter element (transducer). Contrary to all conventional panel speaker designs (whose goal is to create accurate single-point pistonic motion), NXT technology yields complex vibration modes over the entire panel surface. Indeed, the ideal NXT speaker achieves the most complex and dense wave structure possible, uniformly distributed over the operating frequency range.
At a presentation of NXT technology conducted during the Winter Consumer Electronics Show today, several exciting applications of NXT technology were demonstrated, including prototypes of:
A projection TV screen that serves double-duty as a high-fidelity center channel loudspeaker. A complete Dolby Digital home theater audio system consisting of virtually invisible front and surround-channel panels. A ceiling tile that "speaks," designed for public address applications. A three-piece satellite/subwoofer system using NXT technology to create satellite speakers just 3/8-inch thick. Two freestanding NXT "concept" speakers designed to showcase the smoothness, range and musicality of NXT technology in audiophile stereo applications. Wafer-thin NXT speakers built into a laptop computer, bringing the benefits of full-range stereo sound to portable multimedia presentations.
As a licensing company, New Transducer Technologies (NXT) will offer its loudspeaker technology to major international companies in the multimedia, automotive, aerospace, architectural-acoustics and consumer electronics industries. NXT is a division of the Verity Group PLC, a leading European audio consortium. The Verity Group is publicly traded on the London Stock Exchange.
Verity Group's centralized Research and Development facility, V-Labs, employs a team of over 30 world-class scientists covering a broad range of design and engineering disciplines. It is V-Labs' engineers, headed by Henry Azima, who are responsible for the development of NXT technology.
