Bell Atlantic is offering a similar DSL service at around $57 per month. It is the 640Kbps service at $42 per month (DSL line and Internet service) that is delivered on a usable telephone/fax line that AOL is going to offer this summer that is interesting.

Covad and Northpoint offer DSL lines that are resold by ISPs with Internet access in New York but they have to install a new phone line or discontinue the use of one that they now have if they want DSL. I think Covad and Northpoint are both data CLECs and not allowed to offer telephone service on a DSL line.

At this point I am not understanding the business plan of Covad and the other CLECS. Maybe the Bells and AOL can make money on $20 to $25 DSL lines but how can they? You may argue that AOL and Bell Atlantic are going to focus on the home user but I know a lot of business owners that will be interested in such low priced access. The tariff that allows AOL to purchase DSL lines from Bell Atlantic and SBC at such low rates should be available to other ISPs who can sell as many lines and they will be interested in selling to the same business customer that the Covads are interested in.

This DSL market is going to quickly, no immediately, degenerate into a market share scramble and the Bells can take a licking longer. Actually they probably can make money while everyone else takes a licking.
