There is an article on the front page of PC Week 2/10/97. It talks about a new technology called 'plastic fiber' which might become a direct competition to glass fiber. They cited an example:

Copper Glass Fiber Plastic Fiber
Media $512 $1,844 $498
Installation $2,400 $3,800 $1,600

These are estimated cost to install a 16-port hub for either Fast Ethernet or ATM connections...

Boston Optical is developing this technology with partners such as GM, Honeywell and Boeing Co. Others are evaluating the technology such as Digital Equipment, Compaq, Wang Lab.

Not sure if this news has had anything to do with the drop in SPTR stock and/or the 'unsuccessful' secondary offering.
