It was my uderstanding that in order to short, a margin account is needed, and penny stocks like HCCA are not marginable.

Such was my understanding, too. My understanding (possibly wrong) has always been that a stock like HCCA can no more be shorted than traded after-hours.

I've got an un-related question for you, since you seem to know a bit about what's what: How can one quickly determine whether a particular stock is "pink sheets" as opposed to "bulletin board"?

From where I sit, the two appear identical, since I use DBC to get my quotes. I only recently became aware that HCCA is a "pink sheet" stock, and I wish I would've known that in advance.
