Maybe you, or somebody else, can answer me this:

When market makers go short on a stock, are they in effect expanding the float?

I own a stock that has a relatively low float. It appears to me that the MM's are seriously short the stock, perhaps as much as 50% of the float. Do the people that have bought the stock that doesn't exist really have a claim to a chunk of the company? Are the MM's playing some sort of shell game to the shareholder's detriment?

I hope to get a little illumination on this matter.
