Hi JC! I think you can download Linux for free. We heard from friends in Asia that if you wanted LINUX on CD it was around $50.00, but they purchased their CD several years ago.

You can download Linux for free. Unless you have the bandwidth though, the hot tip is to cut loose with the $2 for the CD. The other cost is the price of a book.

The best (and least grievous) way to get Linux installed on your PC is to attend a Linux installfest as is put on from time to time by your local Linux User (read: geek) Group. Those are usually done at computer shows.

Until we (as a community) have our mittens on the Crapware API (soon, I believe) Quicken and the bulk of finance software is one of the few areas that is just beyond our reach in free software.

The most ascended solution for running Unix and legacy Windows programs is a Sun Ultra 5/10 (or clone) with a PCI card. Next to that is having a separate Windows machine on your network (with Samba). Next to *that is a compatibility layer program like WINE. Lastly but not leastly, is a web based solution such as offered by GraphON. The catch there is the bandwidth. In any case, I don't understand why there isn't a web service (online conversion utility) that converts Word and other proprietary formats to open formats for people.

In the end, the answer for the home user isn't Linux or Solaris or NT, but the web (WebTop). As soon as the bandwidth breaks loose, this will get put into perspective, quickly.
