Microsoft really doesn't have too much choice. The desktop is about topped out, PC growth is slowing, and Windows has gone about as far as it can. Not to mention the recent Linux entry which is gaining great momentum. They need to expand into other areas. Hence the move into Windows CE for appliances and this one. Intel is in the same boat to some extent. Wintel for telecommuncations.

However, I think they will find this arena somewhat more competitive. Suns already their with its Java language and servers, and the infrastructure is already there. This is not a situation where MFST is making all the right moves while everyone else is not. Should be very interesting.

Regardless, it should open up lots of opportunity for Qwest as MSFT didn't just throw in 120 million dollars for nothing. I have to think they are going to use it as their backbone.
