Don't open the drive, open the computer case!

The point is to identify the drive unambiguously, which
is not easy if there are several drives mounted next to
each other.

If you have the drive identified, that part's done.

I have had 3 or 4 WDC drives go bad with the symptoms you
mention. All but one had periods of operation after being
shut down completely (power removed) for a while.
