In spite of great losses, the Church succeeded in preserving the
wealth of its treasuries. On the one hand, this was owing to the fact
that they were within the city gates which offered protection from
plundering and fires that had destroyed the artworks in the summer
villas. On the other hand, the reputation of the Church made it quite
difficult for the state to simply reach into the treasures, which did
however happen on several occasions. When in 1806, due to the
pressure of the French occupation forces, the state funds had t be
replenished from the Church's reserves, the state had to ask for the
Pope's permission to transfer the silver and gold owned by the
bishopric to the state treasury for the French army's upkeep. Finally,
the Church collections did not fall victim to collectors to whom the
destitute patricians during their decline in the XIXth century sold their
artworks and libraries.
