IBM provides web management software to freeware Linux and Apache

To me the pricing represents a repeat of IBM offering OS/2 at $300 to replace Windows at $49 . Enywho here's the scoop:

" Cambridge, Mass.

The WebSphere Performance Pack works in a mixed Web server environment, supporting generic HTTP servers, according to Rennie, who noted that the most common combination of servers used in the product's installed base is WebSphere, Apache, and Netscape.

Version 2.0 also offers greater control of service quality, permitting administrators to assign priority to users of specific application functions, such as purchasing or filling complaints in the case of commerce servers, Rennie said. The upgrade also provides user- and
group-based service levels and peak load management.

IBM this week will also roll out an entry-level version of the Web server management software, called WebSphere Performance Pack Cache Manager, which offers the proxy server capability of the full management suite.

The WebSphere Performance Pack Cache Manager provides the performance optimization and filtering of the main suite for departmental systems and smaller organizations, according to officials.

Also at Decorum '99, IBM will announce a business partner program for its AFS and DFS distributed file systems offerings, and a related partnership with a CAD/CAM vendor, officials said.

WebSphere Performance Pack, which runs on Windows NT, Sun Solaris, and
IBM AIX, will be priced at $7,500 per node. Pricing for the WebSphere Performance Pack Cache Manager, which will initially ship on NT and Linux, will be announced in May.

A full release of WebSphere Performance Pack for Linux is due by year's end. "

Then again by May 1999 , NT and Linux pricing sanity could prevail .
