Could you ever pass by a person who was just beat up and laying bleeding on the ground? Could you just pass him by going on your merry way? I couldn't. Never have and never will! This was just as Jane has said. Have you ever been nearby when a neighbor was mugged? Or when a small child was being picked on by a bully? If you were could you just keep walking or would you try to help the injured person? These circumstances are quite different from picking up a big strong healthy hitch hiker, who should be working hard at it to earn his own way through life! Remember they also accused our Lord of being a Samaritan and having a devil. This has nothing to do with picking up hitch hikers. Many roads today are aslo filled with bandits and robbers and murderers. And no matter where one lives he often finds himself on these roads. Would you suggest that a member of your family pick up a hitch hiker? This is not an example of kindness, it is an example of ignorance! On the part of both parties. Encouraging him/her to get a job and maybe even offering him one is kindness. And btw, many of these people have the money.....they are not interested in getting from one point to another.
